VELUX Skylight Installation

Professional VELUX skylight installation bringing natural light into a dark kitchen space, featuring energy-efficient glazing and automated blinds. Flat roof was incorrect installed before which was replaced with a beautiful white TPO with new copper ridge caps with the correct receiver edge metal using hidden screws.

The Challenge

This roof system had several installation and aging issues that ultimately led to major failure and active leaking. One of the main problems was the skylight curb, which is the raised structure the skylight sits on. The existing curb was built too low, making it vulnerable during heavy rain and snow events. Over time, this caused repeated minor water intrusion that eventually contributed to more serious leaks. The edge metal system was also outdated and failing. The original metal was approximately 100 years old and used an older single-piece detail fastened with exposed nails driven through the metal. As the system aged, the metal loosened and shifted, and the exposed fasteners created additional points for water penetration. Another issue was the roofing material itself. The roof had reached the point where replacement was necessary, and the assembly needed to be upgraded to a more reliable low-slope roofing system. The chimney detail also required correction. Proper flashing is critical where the roof meets the chimney, and the existing setup did not provide the level of protection needed for long-term watertight performance.

  • Complete tear-off of old failing roofing system
  • Installation of new white .060 TPO roof system
  • Three-part metal edge system installation at roof perimeter
  • First metal secured to structure with screws to lock down roof membrane
  • Copper edge metal installed as visible finished edge
  • Smaller copper splice pieces at seams to prevent water infiltration
  • TPO membrane extended minimum 8 inches up chimney for waterproof flashing
  • Professional VELUX skylight installation with energy-efficient glazing
  • Automated blinds integration
  • Complete site cleanup and inspection

Materials Used

  • White .060 TPO roofing membrane
  • Three-part copper edge metal system
  • VELUX skylight with energy-efficient glazing
  • Automated skylight blinds
  • Structural fasteners and screws
  • TPO flashing materials
  • Copper splice pieces

Challenges Solved

  • Low skylight curb vulnerability corrected with proper rebuild
  • 100-year-old exposed nail-fastened edge metal replaced with modern concealed system
  • Metal loosening and shifting eliminated through secure three-part system
  • Exposed fastener water penetration points eliminated with hidden screw design
  • Inadequate chimney flashing upgraded with 8-inch TPO membrane extension
  • Failed low-slope roofing material replaced with superior TPO system
  • Long-term watertight performance ensured through modern assembly methods

The Results

The completed system provides a far more durable and watertight low-slope roof assembly. By correcting the skylight curb condition, replacing the failing perimeter metal, upgrading to a new TPO membrane, and improving the chimney flashing detail, this project resolved the major leak points and delivered a much longer-lasting roofing system. The modern three-part copper edge system offers superior protection compared to the older nail-fastened design, while the VELUX skylight brings natural light into the kitchen space with energy-efficient glazing and automated blinds for convenience.
