Glass Railing Deck Remodel
Deck remodel with glass railing system, TPO membrane replacement, and PVC trim upgrades. Removed obstructive side walls to increase view by 33% while upgrading waterproofing for marina property.
The Challenge
This deck remodel project in Marblehead, MA may not have been the largest project we have completed, but it was one that made a major impact for the homeowners. The property sits on a cliff across from the marina, with a beautiful view that the family was not able to fully enjoy because the existing deck railing and side walls blocked too much of the sightline. The main issue with this project was that the existing railing and side wall design limited the homeowners' ability to enjoy one of the best features of the property: the view. The side walls on both the right and left sides of the railing were visually blocking too much of the marina and water exposure. After reviewing the homeowners' wishes, we agreed on a redesign that would remove those side walls and open the visible view by approximately 33%. The deck also had performance issues. The flat roof membrane under the deck boards was no longer in good condition and showed signs of water damage from leaking. That meant the project was not just about improving appearance — it also required correcting the waterproofing system underneath the finished deck surface. At the same time, the railing needed to be installed in a way that delivered maximum safety and security without compromising the clean visual result. The design also called for careful attention to symmetry and finish details so the new structure would look intentional and high-end, not just functional.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of glass railing for deck views?
Glass railing systems provide unobstructed views while maintaining safety and code compliance. Unlike traditional wood or metal balusters that create visual barriers, glass panels allow maximum sightline preservation. This is particularly valuable for properties with water views, scenic overlooks, or architectural features worth showcasing. Glass railings also create a more modern, high-end aesthetic and require minimal maintenance compared to painted wood railings.
How much can glass railing increase usable views?
View improvement depends on the existing railing design and site conditions. In this Marblehead project, removing obstructive side walls and installing glass railing panels increased the visible view by approximately 33%. Properties with exceptional scenery can see significant value improvements when sightlines are maximized, as the view becomes a more integral part of the daily living experience.
Can glass railing be installed on existing decks?
Yes, glass railing systems can often be retrofitted onto existing deck structures, provided the deck framing is sound and properly engineered to handle railing loads. In this project, we anchored the railing posts directly into the joist structure for maximum security. Proper installation requires careful structural assessment and often benefits from thoughtful design considerations like post alignment with architectural features below.
What is TPO membrane and why use it under decks?
TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) is a single-ply roofing membrane that provides excellent waterproofing for flat roof applications. When installed beneath deck boards, TPO creates a durable waterproof barrier that protects the structure below from water damage. TPO offers superior durability compared to older EPDM rubber membranes, particularly in marine environments with salt air exposure. This Marblehead project replaced a failing membrane with new TPO to eliminate water damage and ensure long-term structural protection.
Why use PVC trim in coastal environments?
PVC trim offers superior performance in coastal and marine environments because it does not absorb moisture, rot, warp, or deteriorate from salt air exposure. Traditional wood trim in coastal locations requires frequent maintenance and eventual replacement due to moisture damage and salt corrosion. White PVC trim maintains its appearance and structural integrity indefinitely without painting, staining, or sealing, making it the practical choice for properties near water.
What is picture-frame deck board design?
Picture-frame deck board design creates a border around the deck perimeter using contrasting deck board colors or materials. This design detail adds visual refinement and creates a more custom, luxurious appearance. In this project, we used a very light contrasting board to frame the deck perimeter after extending the deck by approximately 1 foot. This detail elevated the overall aesthetic while adding only modest incremental cost.
How important is railing post alignment with windows below?
Railing post alignment with architectural features below is often overlooked but significantly impacts the visual quality of the finished project. When railing posts align with windows, doors, or other vertical elements, the result appears intentional and architecturally coordinated. This attention to detail separates high-end work from standard installations and demonstrates thoughtful design consideration that enhances the overall aesthetic.
Can failing deck waterproofing be replaced without rebuilding the entire deck?
Yes, in many cases failing waterproof membranes can be replaced while preserving the existing deck structure and boards. This requires careful removal and reinstallation of deck boards, replacement of the membrane system, and proper detailing during reassembly. This approach can be more cost-effective than complete deck replacement while still addressing critical waterproofing failures. In this Marblehead project, we replaced the failing membrane with new TPO while also upgrading the railing system and finish details.
How much does a glass railing deck remodel cost in Marblehead, MA?
Costs vary based on deck size, railing length and complexity, extent of waterproofing work needed, structural modifications required, material selections, and finish detail level. Glass railing systems typically cost more than traditional wood or metal railings but deliver superior views and require less maintenance. Marine environment considerations may also influence material and installation costs. Contact WaterTite Co. for a detailed assessment and accurate quote for your specific deck remodel needs.
